House Speaker Mike Johnson announced the approval of President Donald Trump’s major legislative package on July 3, 2025. The bill, described by Trump as “big and beautiful,” passed the House of Representatives with a narrow margin of 218 to 214 votes.
Only two Republicans opposed the bill, despite initial resistance from a faction of Trump’s own party. However, most of these dissenters were persuaded to support the legislation. All Democrats voted against it.
This extensive tax and spending bill had already been approved by the Senate earlier in the week but had to return to the House due to amendments made by senators. Following this final approval, the bill will be sent to President Trump, who has indicated he will sign it into law on July 4, America’s Independence Day.
The legislation covers a wide range of issues, including funding changes to Medicaid, Social Security, food assistance programs, and clean energy subsidies. It extends the tax cuts first introduced in 2017 and introduces new tax relief measures, such as eliminating taxes on tips and overtime pay temporarily. The bill also allocates significant funds for military spending and immigration enforcement, while proposing substantial cuts to social safety net programs like Medicaid and food aid.
This bill represents a major shift in federal policy, redirecting resources from social programs and clean energy initiatives toward tax reductions, defense, and border security. The passage marks a significant legislative achievement for Trump and the Republican Party, consolidating many of their priorities into one comprehensive package.
Despite its passage, the bill remains controversial, with Democrats vowing to oppose it vigorously and make it a central issue in their campaign to regain control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections.
